FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL 2013 DAY 3 – CAT POWER

Continuing our highlights from Day 3 of FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL 2013

CAT POWER‘s set on the White Stage began with a solitary Chan Marshall lighting a stick of incense at the front of the stage, taking a swig of beer and stalking around the dimly-lit stage before hauntingly singing out with her signature powerful and impassioned vocals.

Despite stumbling a couple of times, her performance was tight, polished yet somehow raw, and certainly passionate. Her delivery was on-point and incredibly strong, and her mannerisms on stage complemented the style of her rock melodies. There were some great moments of onstage interaction between Marshall and multi-instrumentalist Gregg Foreman, while the other band members lurking in the shadows in the background were furtively demonstrating their musical talents.

Cat Power boasts an expansive and interesting career, releasing a total of 9 albums after forming in 1992, the most recent of which being “Sun” which came out in September last year and debuted at number 10 on the Billboard charts, making it the most successful debut of all her albums. During her career, she has worked with artists such as Yoko Ono, Eddie Vedder, The Dirty Three and Dave Grohl and toured supporting Nick Cave.

Surviving struggles with alcohol and emotional breakdowns, she remains a strong and influential artist, and this was displayed clearly to all those watching on Sunday. Cat Power’s next scheduled gig is The Weezer Cruise in February next year alongside the likes of The Cribs and Toro Y Moi.
